Heceta Beach under health advisory

Health Advisory posted for Driftwood Shores area

Just in time for the last big push of summer… a public health advisory has been issued for the Heceta Beach area in Florence.  Curtis Cude (KOOD) with the Oregon Health Authority says water samples taken in three areas… just north of Driftwood Shores, just south of the resort and directly in front… show “higher than normal levels” of fecal bacteria.  The contamination can lead to gastroenteritis, skin rashes and upper respiratory infections.

Visitors to the beach should avoid contact with the water.  Surface runoff and ocean water in the immediate area is considered to be dangerous to contact at this point.  But, according to health officials, recreational activities on the beach can be continued.

The source of the pathogens and fecal bacteria aren’t clear.  Florence Public Works Director Mike Miller says warning signs will be posted in the area.
