Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – The Medford School District may lay off
some teaching assistants, custodians or tech support employees
after the classified workers union voted to reject a proposed 6
percent pay cut. Superintendent Phil Long tells the Mail Tribune
that administrators are still calculating how many jobs might have
to be cut to close a budget gap of $1.25 million.

NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) – The Lincoln County sheriff’s office says
the body recovered by the Coast Guard Wednesday in Depoe Bay is a
Utah man who had been reported missing on Tuesday. The sheriff’s
office says 26-year-old Cody McCormick of West Jordan, Utah, had
been visiting relatives who reported him missing from their home at
Gleneden Beach, south of Lincoln City.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – The ACLU has come to the aid of Eugene
business owners who put up signs opposing a proposed Lane Transit
District bus rapid transit project. The city threatened several
businesses with $100-a-day-fines because the city says their
protest signs violate the sign ordinance. The ACLU says the
ordinance violates First Amendment free speech rights.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A man who was wounded last year by a
Washington County sheriff’s deputy has sued the county and the
deputies involved. The Oregonian reports 49-year-old Leonard
Salanitro of Orange, Calif., was shot last Sept. 21 while staying
at the home of friends in suburban Portland. Deputies went to the
home to check a report the resident had kicked a neighbor’s truck.
Salanitro says he was shot without warning when he entered the
room. Sheriff Rob Gordon said the shooting was justified because
Salanitro attacked a deputy.
