TIGARD, Ore. (AP) – A broken water main flooded five homes in
Tigard last night and left 150 homes without water service.
Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue says thousands of gallons of water
flowed down a street for more than two hours before it was shut off
by the Tualatin Valley Water District. Crews are making repairs and
checking for road damage.
MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – They’re breathing a sigh of relief in
Southern Oregon, where one of the region’s largest employers —
Harry & David — is getting ready to emerge from bankruptcy
proceedings. A federal judge in Delaware has approved a
reorganization plan for the Medford gift and gourmet food company
that fell on hard times in recent years.
VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) – A woman who never met the 16 permanent
residents of the Oregon Primate Rescue has left them $80,000 after
her death. Trudy Banks is executor of Jean Barr’s estate. She says
the Vancouver, Wash., woman who died in May at age 71 had never
liked the fact that monkeys were used for experiments. Banks
presented the check this week to the rescue’s founder, Polly
Schultz, at the operation’s 28-acre sanctuary near Longview, Wash.
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – Some scientists say restoring wolves in
the West could help restore the Canada lynx, a threatened species.
An article in the journal Wildlife Society Bulletin suggests that
wiping out wolves in the early 1900s allowed coyote populations to
explode. Those extra coyotes preyed heavily on the lynx’s favorite
food, the snowshoe hare, as well as lynx themselves. The authors
are from Oregon State University, the University of Washington, and
the University of Wyoming.
