SEATTLE (AP) – Mike Trout homered twice and drove in five runs
to lead the Los Angeles Angels to a 13-6 rout of the Seattle
Mariners last night. Trout started the onslaught in the second with
a solo shot into the left-field bullpen on a 3-2 pitch from Anthony
Vasquez. Vasquez walked the first two batters in the fourth before
Trout added a three-run blast into the left-field seats for a 4-0
lead. Jerome Williams went seven innings, allowing four runs on
seven hits. He walked two and struck out six.
LOS ANGELES (AP) – Candace Parker scored a season-high 27 points
and the Los Angeles Sparks beat Seattle 68-62 last night, denying
the Storm a chance to clinch a playoff berth. Parker scored 10 of
her points in the fourth quarter, including hitting three free
throws in the final minute to seal it. Tina Thompson had 12 points
and Ebony Hoffman added 11 to help the Sparks stay 1 1/2 games behind
San Antonio for the West’s last playoff spot.
RENTON, Wash. (AP) -Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll says
tight end John Carlson will need season-ending surgery to repair a
torn labrum in his shoulder. Carroll said yesterday that Carlson
will need surgery to fix the tear that has sidelined him for the
past two weeks of training camp. Carlson was expected to be used in
multiple two tight end sets along with newcomer Zach Miller.
Carlson is in the final year of his contract with Seattle.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Oregon quarterback Darron Thomas still isn’t
over the loss to Auburn in the BCS championship game. So the No. 3
Ducks’ season opener against No. 4 LSU on Saturday has all kinds of
implications: It’s a chance to redeem himself against a highly
ranked team on national TV, a game many say will set the tone for
the season. But Thomas says it’s like the championship game: if
Oregon loses, it’s a done season.
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) – Washington State coach Paul Wulff is being
low-key about his team’s opener with Idaho State on Saturday. Wulff
says the Cougars have improved but now must prove it on the field
Saturday. While Idaho State was one of the worst teams in the
lower-division FCS last year, Wulff says the Cougars won’t look
past them. Wulff says the Cougars can only control their own play,
and will be looking to elevate their performance.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – After an eight-year absence, Peter
Jacobsen’s 36-hole charity golf tournament has successfully resumed
on a smaller scale in the Umpqua Bank Challenge at Portland Golf
Club. Steve Elkington and Scott McCarron romped to the title,
shooting a better-ball score of 24-under par 120 to win by six
strokes over Jay Haas and John Cook. Elkington and McCarron split a
first-place prize of $100,000 from the overall $530,000 purse.
