Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Pacific Power blames vandals for a power
outage last night that left at least 7,000 customers in the
Willamette Valley in the dark. The utility tells KVAL that the
vandalism was a substation near Brownsville. The outage also
affected some Emerald PUD customers who depend on Pacific Power
transmission lines.

CLARNO, Ore. (AP) – Firefighters trying to contain a 45,000-acre
grass fire in central Oregon are getting a break from the weather,
after red flag warnings expired. A dispatcher at the Central Oregon
Interagency Dispatch Center in Prineville said today there were no
flare-ups or problems overnight. The fire was started Wednesday by
lightning, 60 miles southeast of The Dalles. Other wildfires have
burned 20,000 acres along the lower Deschutes River and 1,500 acres
near Warm Springs.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Some vendors in Portland parks are
irritated by competitors on bikes who ride in hauling wheeled
coolers and sell ice cream bars. The Oregonian reports the bikers
are supposed to have a city permit to peddle their goods, but none
have been bought. Fixed vendors who are paying $120 a month for a
license say that’s not fair.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Corps of Engineers plans to build a
1-acre island in Malheur Lake in southeast Oregon in hopes of
luring more Caspian terns into nesting there – instead of near the
mouth of the Columbia River where they have been eating too many
young salmon and steelhead. New islands are being built as the
corps shrinks East Sand Island, which was created with Columbia
River dredging spoils.
