The Associated Press

SEATTLE (AP) – Brandon Morrow allowed three hits and one run
over six innings and the Toronto Blue Jays connected for three home
runs in a 5-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners last night. Morrow,
who didn’t allow a hit until there were two outs in the fourth,
struck out a season-high 12. It’s the fourth time this season he
has fanned 10 or more. This marked the first time Morrow had faced
his former team in Seattle, which took him in the first round of
the 2006 draft.

SEATTLE (AP) – The Seattle Mariners have completed their trade
with the Detroit Tigers by acquiring right-handed pitcher Chance
Ruffin. The teams finished the transaction yesterday. The initial
trade July 30 sent pitchers Doug Fister and David Pauley to Detroit
for outfielder Casper Wells, left-hander Charlie Furbush and
infield prospect Francisco Martinez. Ruffin reports to Seattle,
which designated left-hander Aaron Laffey for assignment.

SEATTLE (AP) – Seattle Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik
(zur-EHN’-sihk) has had some success with players from the Atlantic
Coast Conference. He is hoping the positive results continue after
Seattle selected Virginia left-hander Danny Hultzen with the second
overall pick in this year’s draft and Clemson shortstop Brad Miller
with its second-round pick. The Mariners introduced their top
selections yesterday.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) – Goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen came within 10
minutes of a shutout despite being hit in the head by an object
thrown from the stands, and Sporting Kansas City beat the Portland
Timbers 3-1 last night. Graham Zusi scored twice and Soony Saad
marked his 19th birthday and his MLS debut with another goal for
Kansas City. Portland lost its second in a row and fell to 7-12-5.
Two people were arrested in the throwing incident.

UNDATED (AP) – Oregon coach Chip Kelly was emphatic: Quarterback
Darron Thomas was not going to be disciplined simply because he was
a passenger in a car driven by a teammate that was clocked at 118
mph. And, while concerned about an officer’s suspicion that there
was marijuana in the rental car, Kelly was standing by Thomas and
cornerback Cliff Harris, who was driving. But the incident has
proven another black eye for Oregon.
